Teaching Assistant
University of Miami, School of Architecture
During my fourth year, I served as a teaching assistant for a first-year design and drawing course. Professors sought my input before the semester even began, having taken the class several years prior. I explained what worked well from my own perspective as a student, and what did not. We collaborated over a host of new ideas, big and small, to enhance the overall experience.
Knowing that professors can't be everywhere at once, I relished the chance to help any and everyone. I learned to think faster on my feet, having to handle any spontaneous questions and concerns in an efficient, appropriate, and supportive manner. It was fulfilling, and always enjoyable, to mentor younger students on the fundamentals of design, drawing, and various computer programs. The excitement from students when it "clicks," or they create something they can be truly proud of, is worth every second spent helping them get there. It's a win-win for both student and teacher.
