American Academy in Rome
Designing in Rome is never easy with its extensive history and incredible depth. The challenge was to create a new American Academy, with a redesigned piazza and covered gallery, next to the pristine church of San Salvatore. It was a critical focus of the design to create living spaces and provide enhanced amenities for the modern student, all without deviating from the fabric of the old city.
The basement, ground, and first floors contain the public galleries, art halls, dining rooms, and studios. All living arrangements for both students and faculty are delegated to the second, third, and fourth floors. The altana level tops the new academy off with a covered pergola complete with a viewing platform and seating arrangements.
The new piazza and covered gallery tie the church together with the academy, and surrounding site. Everything integrates its way back into the timeless classical architecture and design that has become so synonymous with Rome.
