The annual winter intensive, at the ICAA's national chapter in New York City,  is an eight-day course of study in the classical orders, composition, proportion, drafting, observational drawing, and the literature of classical architecture and art.  Taught by working professionals and instructors active in the field of classical design, the curriculum balances between studio work, lectures, guided tours, and site visits.

The week crescendos with a studio project where participants use the classical canon in the design of a small building.  This rewarding design process is rooted in the Beaux-Arts system, as in an initial parti is developed from an esquisse and charrette into a finalized proposal.  The program concludes with a review by an esteemed panel of architects and designers.

It was profoundly illuminating to spend more than an entire week immersed in the curriculum at the ICAA.  I consider myself even more fortunate,
and humbled, knowing that I was awarded the opportunity to attend this prestigious intensive by the sponsorship of my own office,
at G. P. Schafer Architect.
